It started with a simple query from our senior reporter Bea Cupin, who was in Laoag to cover the voting of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family: Why is the vote count for Laoag that appeared on the media transparency server bigger than the votes canvassed in the city?
This prompted a video call with Rappler’s tech, data, and research team in the wee hours of Tuesday, May 13. Our data scientists then reviewed the files they had received from the Comelec Media Server, and what they found so far are in this top story.
The Comelec said the glitch had been addressed as of 2 am, and the counts on the Rappler election results site have since been adjusted to reflect the accurate numbers. The good news: Even after the duplicate counts are set aside, the Magic 12 of election night remains.
There are a lot of surprises from last night — both in the national and local races. We will be making sense of them in the coming days!
