MANILA, Philippines – Senator Nancy Binay won in her bid as Makati mayor, becoming the fifth member of their family to lead one of the richest cities in the Philippines.
Securing 114,898 votes, she defeated her brother-in-law, Makati 2nd District Representative Luis Campos, the husband of term-limited Mayor Abby Binay. Campos secured 85,664 votes.
Binay stayed awake through the night awaiting the proclamation at Makati Coliseum, where the canvassing was happening.
“Hindi pa man tayo napo-proclaim pero nanalo na po tayong lahat (We’re not yet proclaimed, but we already won),” Binay, who stayed awake through the night awaiting the proclamation, said at 5:09 am on Tuesday, May 13.
Binay said she would wait for the 100% processing of results so her supporters, who had been waiting for the proclamation at the Makati Coliseum, wouldn’t be exhausted. As of 5:19 am Tuesday, four voting precincts had yet to transmit results. The transmission was completed at 1:40 pm.
Nancy’s candidacy was backed by her father Jejomar, mother Elenita, and brother Junjun, all former mayors of Makati. She ran under the platform “Serbisyong Best. Serbisyong Binay.” (Best Service. Binay Service)
This is not the first time the Binay family has faced internal competition for political power. In 2019, siblings Abby and Junjun squared off for the mayoral position, a race that Abby won.
In that election, Abby’s only family ally was her father, Jejomar, who ran for Makati 1st District congressman.
Meanwhile, Junjun had the support of the rest of the family, including their mother, former mayor Elenita Binay, and his sisters, Anne and Nancy. Despite the rift, Junjun still endorsed his father as his congressional candidate but the elder Binay lost to Kid Peña.
Nancy served in the Senate for two consecutive terms, from 2013 to 2025. Prior to her Senate stint — from 2010 to 2013 — she worked for her father, who was then the vice president of the Philippines and was at the time the most popular potential presidential candidate for 2016. – Rappler.com
